Should you fly into Brisbane for schoolies?

Brisbane (BNE) has the widest network of the three airports — the most international arrivals and the broadest interstate schedule. If your city doesn’t have a sensible direct flight into Ballina or the Gold Coast, or the good times are already booked out, Brisbane is usually the one that gets you here. It’s also the natural choice for anyone flying in from overseas.

The trade-off is distance. Brisbane is about a 2¼- to 2½-hour drive to Byron, depending on traffic — well over twice the Gold Coast run and a good deal longer than the ~35-minute hop from Ballina. That’s exactly why the Brisbane leg is the one you want pre-booked and comfortable rather than improvised at the taxi rank after a long flight.

There’s no per-person shuttle on the Brisbane route — the seasonal per-person “Airport Shuttle” only runs ex-Ballina and ex-Gold Coast on select schoolies dates.
